A Yard Supervisor in car loading and unloading is responsible for overseeing the efficient, safe, and accurate movement of vehicles or cargo in an outdoor storage or staging area. They manage the day-to-day operations, lead a team of workers, coordinate with logistics for incoming/outgoing shipments, and enforce strict safety standards.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Loading/Unloading Operations: Direct and oversee the loading and unloading of vehicles (cars) onto trucks, railcars, or trailers, ensuring proper handling and placement of goods and lashing in rack.
Team Leadership & Scheduling: Supervise and coordinate the activities of yard workers, assigning tasks, creating work schedules, and ensuring adequate staffing to meet operational goals.
Safety Compliance: Enforce health and safety regulations, conduct regular safety inspections, hold safety meetings, and ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Inventory & Documentation Management: Maintain accurate records of all goods stored, incoming shipments, and outgoing loads
Logistics Coordination: Coordinate with drivers, transport managers, and warehouse staff to optimize traffic flow and minimize vehicle turnaround times.
Problem Solving: Resolve issues related to loading/unloading, such as damage, shortages, or equipment failure.
Key Skills & Qualifications
· Experience: Previous experience in a supervisory role in a yard, logistics, or transportation environment.
· Leadership: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a team of workers.
· Technical Skills: Proficiency in using yard management software or ERP.
· Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of safety regulations.
· Communication & Organization: Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-pressure, outdoor environment.
